Accentuate The Positive
An old song admonishes good advice in a catchy tune: Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative. My parents said, “If you can’t say something nice, be quiet.” And “Children should be seen and not heard.” My sense of trust and safety were deeply damaged by their words and actions. It’s not true that sticks and stones can break my bones, but words will never hurt me. I had wounds I couldn’t see. I’ve chosen not to keep their secrets. Even as I move forward past their crippling predictions, there are brittle bones in my nest, and sharp broken glass in my heart.
